Reasons and tips to support entrepreneurs this season

The situation we are experiencing due to COVID-19, in addition to affecting health, has also put the country’s economy in check. There are some sectors more affected than others, however, entrepreneurs of medium or short trajectory have been, perhaps, the hardest hit.

.

The word «reinvent yourself» is possibly becoming a crutch, but in reality it has been the option for entrepreneurs and their workers to move forward. The key during any crisis is to have the ability to accept that it is necessary to innovate again and again.

The key is to have the ability to accept that it is necessary to innovate over and over again.

The key is to have the capacity to accept that it is necessary to innovate over and over again.

Bearing in mind that entrepreneurship generates about 8 thousand formal jobs in the country, according to a study conducted by INNpulsa and the National University, Medellin branch,

«reinventing oneself» also becomes an obligation for entrepreneurs.

.

Well, in general, unemployment figures are worrying. In Colombia, the number reaches more than one million new unemployed, according to the Ministry of Labor. Globally, it could reach from 5.3 million to 25 million unemployed as a result of the spread of the coronavirus, the International Labor Organization warned in a Forbes article.

In parallel, the needs of consumers remain in force during the quarantine, but difficulties arise to reach them directly; and other needs arise demanding innovation in processes and products by entrepreneurs. So,why support entrepreneurs and how to do it in this time of contingency? Here we tell you.

8 reasons to support entrepreneurs

.

  1. Buying directly from local entrepreneurs and businesses contributes to the growth and strengthening of the economy.
  2. Jobs from the ventures are maintained and possibly new jobs are built.
  3. Most of the time, the ventures are committed to offering sustainable and environmentally friendly products. If you choose to buy products from these ventures you also contribute to the care of the environment.
  4. If you choose to buy products from these ventures you also contribute to the care of the environment.
  5. You get unique, original and special gifts. Whoever receives a detail purchased from an enterprise has something different, which has been made with dedication, and in some cases personalized.
  6. You get a unique, original and special gift.
  7. You get an excellent customer service. For entrepreneurs their customers are very valuable, and attend them properly, answer all their doubts, talk about your product or service with passion. Finally, you know that a good experience will be reflected in a recurring customer or that they will recommend you to their friends. Here the saying «served by the business owner»
  8. applies.

  9. Fast delivery of products. Buying local ensures that there is an advantage in shipping times.  Now, it should be noted that some businesses are adapting to these new modalities.
  10. When you buy from a startup you support creativity, original design and innovation. Local talent is very valuable.
  11. «The money stays at home.» Unlike buying from department stores or buying imported products, entrepreneurs keep the money flowing because they generally also source their raw materials from local suppliers.

Actions we can take to help entrepreneurs

    .

    • As we have already said, the main thing is Buy from local businesses, in the neighborhood stores, from artisans, the farmers in the square. Buy from ventures that use social networks as a showcase.
    • Supporting the businesses of friends, relatives; helping them to make them known to more people, through their own social networks, for example.
    • If you have knowledge in digital marketing, digital platforms, online payments, you can offer free help to achieve its implementation in ventures that have not yet made the step to digital.
    • Recommend products that have been purchased from entrepreneurs.
    • Like posts of entrepreneurship businesses, commenting on the posts, interacting with their content.

    Entrepreneurs who adapt or reinvent

    .

The moment we live in has directed various sectors to seek alternatives for the sustainability of their businesses, either creating new products, adapting their business ideas to current needs or exploring digital and home tools. For example, businesses of furniture for homes, fashion that offers biosecurity garments, details to celebrate special dates at home, among others.

    Because

They are looking for alternatives for the sustainability of their businesses, either creating new products, adapting their business ideas to the current needs or exploring digital and home tools.

Because #ConTranquilidadPodemos we talked to some entrepreneurs and they told us how they have managed to cope with this time of contingency and how people can help their ventures.

We asked them how they have managed to overcome this time of contingency and how people can help their ventures.

    We asked them:

    1. How have you managed to cope during this time?
    2. How have you managed to cope during this time?
    3. How do you think people can help entrepreneurs? That is, as entrepreneurs how would you like your customers to help you.

More than offering products or aiming only to sell, I have set as a goal to generate valuable content that connects us and that can help them during this time,» says Ana.

    «

«As far as products are concerned, I’ve been able to create a lot of content that connects us and that can help them.

«In terms of products, I have focused on those I already had and that in this time of quarantine have been very valuable, such as the kitchen aprons, and I have also created new ones, such as gift kits and mouth covers». This is precisely what is happening with some brands and businesses that have seen the demand for protective clothing as a business opportunity.

For Ana Blooms, there are many ways to help entrepreneurs, for example, sharing their work on social networks, having interactions with their publications if they like something (writing something, recommending it to someone, etc).

And he adds «having empathy with entrepreneurs is very important. That is,  understand that we are all adapting to new methods and that we may have mistakes and failures in the processes, but instead of judging or pointing fingers, have empathy and be understanding, show support and patience, so that we grow together.»

«Now we share recipes and our followers choose from several options which ones they prefer to learn. We know that this may be a season where people are thinking about saving and maybe they don’t have in their priorities to buy flowers or desserts; however, by being connected with our social networks learning and enjoying they join us and we feel their support,» Yasmin tells.

    .

La Rosaleda also tells us that they have not been so demanding with orders. «If there is availability, the same day it is made and delivered; we have been working Sundays and holidays, we have been flexible,» Yasmin adds.

Also, he says that this time of contingency «for Ktache has been a time to reinvent itself, it has been a boost to enhance e-commerce and the digital theme of the brand. We relaunched the website. With all this theme we are doing more digital marketing and we have managed to be alert about what is happening.»

    .

Ktache also agrees that «sharing our products, recommending us to your friends, on social networks, is a way that helps us get more people to know us. All entrepreneurs have fixed expenses, we have to keep paying payroll, premises and this is a way to manage to sustain business.»

«To overcome these weeks of quarantine, we have focused our efforts in the digital area and also started to offer the option of home delivery to facilitate the acquisition of our products,

«preserving the health of our customers,» indicates Almacén El Hachazo.

For them the best way to support them is for customers to take advantage of the use of digital tools by avoiding leaving home, «they are the demands of this era, and adapting to them is what will allow sectors like ours to continue to operate». Certainly, the fabrics have been in great demand precisely for the production of masks, uniforms and gowns for the health area and protective clothing.

Among the advice given by Daniela and David to support entrepreneurs, they agree in  «understand that, now more than ever, we must buy Colombian products, from small and medium-sized local companies. We must all be very conscious of choosing who to buy from so that the country’s economy is reactivated,» they say.

«We must also be empathetic and patient because we are learning about the logistical processes.

The 14 activities that great entrepreneurs try to do at the weekend

Building your own business can be an absorbing task that takes up all your time. However, it’s important to know how to disconnect so that your brain can recover energy and continue to perform at its best at work.

Entrepreneurs must learn to carry out that process, especially taking advantage of the weekend to do so, as the magazine Forbes points out. «Weekends are the secret weapon of entrepreneurs,» declares Laura Vanderkam, who has written ‘What Successful People Do on the Weekend’. «You have to use the weekends to unwind and arrive at Monday full of energy,» she insists.

In the prestigious magazine they outline a plan of action for the weekends, based on various interviews with successful entrepreneurs about the entrepreneurial activities they do (or try to do) on the weekends. The 14 main ones they do are as follows.

    They are as follows.

    1. Time with family and friends

    Time with family and friends

    2.

This activity is very important, especially for entrepreneurs who do not spend much time with their loved ones throughout the week, so young entrepreneurs can emerge, but most importantly, they strengthen ties with the family.

    2.

    2. Exercise

Mens sana in corpore sano. Exercising is basic for everyone. If you spend the whole week working, you have to try to take advantage during the weekend to exercise your body. In addition, physical activity helps us to clear our minds and fill them with new ideas. In addition, it can be used to establish new relationships.

    .

    3. Develop a passion

    .

Painting, writing, singing, dancing, composing, etc. Developing a passion for some kind of activity helps you escape, and above all serves to achieve balance in life, as Marscha Egan, coaching

    Managerial coaching

    .

    4. Travel

Going on vacation during the weekend is an important respite from work, especially after an intense week, and allows a break from routine.

    4.

    5. Disconnect

It is important to break away from email, cell phone, etc. for a period of time. Saturday and Sunday may be a good time to do this, even if it is not for the whole day.

    6. Volunteering

Helping others is an activity that helps to achieve balance in life. It helps us to disconnect but also to feel fulfilled. You can carry out an activity that you like to collaborate with non-profit organizations. One such activity that is very successful among great entrepreneurs is fundraising, which allows you to meet other people and develop your philanthropic role.

    7. Avoid housework

    .

Although if you work throughout the week the only time you have free to carry out household chores is the weekend, you should try to do it as quickly as possible (you can set aside a specific time every weekend), and then banish it from your mind the rest of the rest of the days off.

    8. Plan for the medium and long term

    9.

Planning makes people more effective. If you arrive at work on Monday with everything planned, you will gain a lot of time. That’s why successful people use the weekends to plan their medium- and long-term goals (even a year ahead).

Plan for the medium and long term

    9. Socialize

There are many studies that show that, as social creatures, people need to spend time with other people to achieve happiness. «Socializing is very close to sex in terms of basic needs to achieve happiness,» Vanderkam points out. It includes both going out with family, or with friends, and participating in the community.

    10. Leisure activities

    .

These activities are especially important for people who spend the whole week cooped up in an office. People go for gardening, crafts, games, sports, cooking, or cultural activities such as concerts or opera.

    11. Meet people

The networking is a way of life, so wherever they go, successful entrepreneurs try to weave relationships and meet new people.

    12. Reflect

People who achieve success need to take some time to appreciate what they have accomplished, their happiness and their successes. Weekends are good times to do that kind of reflecting.

    7 keys to successful entrepreneurship

The success of entrepreneurship is usually followed by a series of actions that you must follow in all your business proposals, and these are transversal to any type of entrepreneurship. To help you turn your idea into a successful project, here are 7 practical tips that are easy to incorporate and that will help you on your way as an entrepreneur:

  • Know your customer. Study your customer’s behavior. Analyze what they buy, how much they buy, how much they spend, how often they buy and where. In this way you will be able to project if your idea is sustainable and thus implement it. No matter how good an idea is, if it has no customers or potential users, it is useless. One of the keys to success in entrepreneurship is to maintain a sustainable development in each of your ideas, and for this, the customers who could consume your product are the most important thing.
  • Construct a clear business plan. Once you have a clear idea of your venture, you will need to make a projection of projected expenses and sales. This will be very useful to get organized, estimate the real possibilities of growth (or market need for your service or product) that your venture has, and also, to evaluate your progress, if you are really looking to be successful as an entrepreneur. At the end of this article we leave you a link that can help you in this point.
  • Form a good working team. You are in the first stage. Do not despair. After defining your product or service and your work plan, you will be able to see if your venture requires -and at what stage- more human resources to get it started. Look for people who add value to the company and to you as an entrepreneur and as a person. Make sure they are people different from you, so that their talents complement each other and the greatest beneficiary is the user and/or client. Successful entrepreneurs are always surrounded by determined and knowledgeable people. If you want to get there fast go alone, if you want to go far go with others.
  • Surround yourself with experienced entrepreneurs. This is very useful, because all entrepreneurs sooner or later go through the same experiences. Ask them how they succeeded; you should take their advice and apply it to your life and business. They have already traveled much of the road and are much further ahead than you. You will have footsteps to follow, take advantage of them.
  • Take advantage of them.
  • Always have alternative ideas, «Plan B» Your initial ideas may evolve and be constantly changing once you start developing them, so you need to be flexible to the different types of businesses that may be presented to you in the future and be very smart when investing in them. Entrepreneurship is a path of constant change. Many people have started with an idea, and as time goes by they realize that what they really wanted was not even close to the initial idea.
  • Always think digital. A digital strategy is essential to quickly reach a large number of potential customers, learning about this topic can help you a lot in the early stage of the project, to publicize your brand and your value proposition. You will need to create a website in which you can make your brand known to others and thus encourage its rapid growth with the help of social networks. There are free courses validated by Google to train you in this regard, check the link at the end of this article. Learning is also entrepreneurship.
  • .

  • Do not give up, and keep trying. This is perhaps the most important thing, there will be times when you will see everything black, with no future, but it is time to rethink everything and dare to make radical changes. And if you have already failed with a project, try another one, most of the great entrepreneurs failed many times before achieving success, and in each failure they learned a lot.

While there is no magic formula that will make any idea successful, these tips can help you steer your course, and not get lost on the long road to entrepreneurship. Do what you like, enjoy every moment of this experience, because everything will help you grow as a professional, entrepreneur and as a person.

  • 5 types of entrepreneurship

All entrepreneurs have something in common: The desire to create. However, what really motivates them to carry out their projects? It is important to know what motivates the energy to undertake an entrepreneurial project, as this allows to anticipate possible problems that may arise. The motivations of an entrepreneur are different and therefore we can differentiate 5 types of entrepreneur:

    Index of contents

    .

    .

    1. Customer-centric_entrepreneur_type:

    .

The entrepreneur wants to bring any type of product to a specific type of customer,  customer segment,  group of people or type of business.

The entrepreneur wants to bring any type of product to a specific type of customer,  customer segment,  group of people or type of business.

This type of entrepreneur and the business to be undertaken, focuses in this case on generating value and solving problems to a specific type of customer, regardless of what the solution or technology that brings value. The way these companies grow will start by solving a specific problem and will find more needs during the relationship with the customer, needs for which they will create more solutions and consequently more business volume.

An example of this type of company can be wedding planning portals. Their goal is to help couples to organize weddings in a simple way, from there they create other services such as sale of dresses, personalized advice, bride and groom community, wedding ideas, etc. The customer-motivated entrepreneur builds the business by strongly understanding the customer or segment, then looks for which problems hurt the most and devises a solution with them that relies on technology that is well suited to their needs.

In these types of entrepreneurs, it is important that the customer segment you decide to serve is large enough, or wealthy enough, to derive a business from it.

    .

    2. The problem-centered entrepreneur

    .

    .

When an entrepreneur decides to start a company because he has experienced a problem firsthand that he decides to solve his source of motivation is the problem.

When an entrepreneur decides to start a company because he has experienced a problem firsthand that he decides to solve his source of motivation is the problem.

They may have observed the problem from third parties or from complaints in their environment. This can be a good starting point although you have to be careful about several things, for example that the problem is shared by a sufficient number of people and that the solution is not conditioned by your needs, i.e. that you propose a solution that is equally sufficient and effective for all the people who experience the problem.

An example of this type of entrepreneur is that of an entrepreneur from Seville who suffered from speed bumps on the road on his way home and devised an adaptive speed bump system using liquids with non-Newtonian properties (Liquids that harden depending on the speed of the bump – Cornstarch with water for example)

    .

In this case the entrepreneur starts with the problem, defines the customer segment that suffers from the problem in a stronger way to finally define the solution and the technology to be used.

    3.The product entrepreneur:

    .

In this type of entrepreneurship, the promoter, has a product in mind, whatever it is , sees it. It is the most common type of entrepreneur and also one of the most risky. The question to be asked by the entrepreneur who has a product in mind is how important is the problem it solves and whether the solution given by the product is sufficient.

And it is possible that the entrepreneur may have a product in mind, but he or she may not be able to solve the problem.

Also, it is possible that the market he was thinking of does not even exist.

The product-oriented entrepreneur first defines the product and inherently the technology associated with it, then defines the problem it solves and finally the customer segment.

    4. The technology-centric entrepreneur type

    .

When an entrepreneur is moved by a technology it means that he has invented a platform or an invention for which an application must be found. An example of platform can be a new material with certain properties for which there is no application yet, a platform for generating web pages like wordpress, facebook is also a platform, ebay, google market, twitter,  Apple’s app store, istockphoto are more examples of platforms and technologies.

When this type of entrepreneur has created a platform or an invention for which an application must be found.

When this type of entrepreneur has created a technology he is looking for problems to solve, which leads him to define the customer segment. Typically, the business model is based on selling licenses to use the technology or selling access to the platform.

When this type of entrepreneur has created a technology, he is looking for problems to solve, which leads him to define the customer segment.

    5. From sales

Finally, there is the sales-driven entrepreneur. This is an opportunistic entrepreneur, as he or she has spotted an opportunity, and is going to exploit it. The product, the technology or the customer segment are not as relevant to him as the fact of making sales. Normally this type of entrepreneur comes from the commercial world, closing deals and sales is what makes him/her generate the adrenaline that motivates him/her to continue. This entrepreneur generates sales channels in the form of on-line commerce or through direct sales of existing products and with known customers.

This classification is intended to serve as a guide to become aware and better know what type of project we are carrying out.

I found this classification in the book The Lean Entrepreneur and I thought it was important to share it to avoid making the mistake of jumping from one type of company to another in the same project, know the operation and process of each type of entrepreneur, helps us to focus and undertake the processes of entrepreneurship and innovation with greater focus.

    7 types of entrepreneurship

For anyone with an interest in innovating and looking for new business models, knowing the characteristics of the types of ventures is an excellent way to help their creativity flow.

In the end, the particularities of the ventures have important repercussions in the marketing and sales strategies of each one, so it is worth having a clear concept of how to classify them.

What types of entrepreneurship are there?

    .

The types of entrepreneurship according to their purpose are:

    1.

    1. Small businesses

    .

In these, the owner runs the organization, perhaps with a couple of employees at his or her command.

These are the businesses that we can see on the streets or avenues of our cities and, which are barely profitable for their owners. They are considered successful if they manage to maintain the basic needs of the family.

    2. Scalable businesses

Their purpose goes beyond just producing enough to financially cover their owner.

They are conceived with the idea of generating high levels of growth

    thanks to innovation and strategies.

Technological businesses, related to the development of software and electronic devices is a good example of company focused on the concept of scalability.

    3. Social organizations

In these, the main intention is not to generate money or take market share. It’s about generating an impact in the world.

Normally they are non-profit companies and focus on sectors such as education, human rights, human development, health or environment.

Now, we can also divide the types of ventures according to their level of innovation.

    Are you ready?

    Are you ready?

    4. Novel ventures

    .

When a venture is based on developing and researching to create a product or service innovative, it can be categorized as a novel venture.

These are the ones that can generate the most impact in the face of a problem or market need.

One of its main characteristics is that when the innovative idea is generated, they require a lot of capital to develop the entire research process and then the implementation of the business model.

    5. Opportunistic businesses

These serve a specific need at a specific time with a business proposal designed especially for that opportunity.

    5 keys to entrepreneurship

You are blinded by the illusion, the conviction that a great idea can change the world… and also your life! But things are not so easy: legal loopholes, poor choice of partners and team… In the global world in which we live there are many ideas that are developed in parallel, but only the best ones succeed. For this reason, we suggest five keys that you should take into account before starting a business.

1- Choose your partners and/or team well

    .

It is very likely that you will end up spending more time with your partners than with your family, so from the very beginning you must be sure that you are choosing the best travel companions. It’s better to be red once than yellow a hundred times, so think carefully about who you start this adventure with. And, of course, never let business take away great friendships

    .

    Get partners now!

2- Share your idea with others

    .

You’re convinced you have a good idea – that’s great! It’s one of those ideas that, when you tell it, generates «why didn’t I think of it?» reactions

    .

But reality can always be improved. For this it is essential that you tell your idea and test it, that you listen and accept suggestions, learn from close experiences and be willing to adapt and improve it continuously. Work in progress. You have nothing to lose and much to gain.

    .

3- Involve your environment in your project

    .

Putting your idea into action will require more hours than the day has (dude, Zamora wasn’t won in an hour). Knowing how to make your professional life compatible with your personal life will be the key to your success, since you will need the support of those closest to you to achieve the personal enrichment that completes your entrepreneurial adventure. You will have to seek happiness in all areas and not leave aside your personal aspirations.

4 – Plan your resources in the short and medium term

    .

Putting all your resources into an idea is a gesture that will endorse you in front of potential investors. But do not lose the north, you also have to eat, so it will come in handy to have some savings that will allow you to get by until you get benefits.

    10 reasons for entrepreneurship

    Top 10 Reasons for entrepreneurship

    .

In addition to these external causes to a worker, there are others that have to do more with internal issues. Here are 10 reasons why entrepreneurship is worthwhile on a personal level.

    1. Not having bosses

      .

It’s a classic, but it’s true. Entrepreneurship means being your own boss, if we don’t count clients, of course. This gives a lot of freedom and a sense of being able to do things your own way and eliminates in one fell swoop the possibility of having a picky boss who can create some stress for you while you work.

All this is a great way to get the job done.

    1. Bringing one’s own idea forward

      .

The second of these has to do with working in what you love or are passionate about, which is often difficult when looking for paid work, especially these days. Entrepreneurship means doing it in the activity you want. It is rare to see an entrepreneur choose a business niche that has nothing to do with his or her professional and personal aspirations.

    1. Organize your schedule

      .

Although as an entrepreneur, especially at the beginning of the activity, you work long hours, over time, if you learn how to improve your productivity, you can reduce those schedules or even adapt them to be able to carry out other activities, such as travel, family reconciliation, etc.

  • Personal_realization. Putting value on the knowledge one possesses

    .

  • Despite the fact that failure is always present when entrepreneurship, the truth is that entrepreneurship as a freelancer or company is much more exciting than working for others and, if successful, personal fulfillment is full especially because, over time, one can put into practice their knowledge. An example is the creation of blogs where you create content related to that knowledge. In addition, with the help of marketing, you can get economic performance with various advertising strategies.

    1. Freer freedom to travel and reside in different places

      .

If you undertake an activity that you can do by telecommuting, this will allow you to travel and even live in different countries without your activity suffering because you can file your taxes online and manage other accounting issues with your advisor digitally.

An example of such an entrepreneur is the «digital nomad», who travels the world while working.

  • Continuous Learning

    .

  • The dynamism of any industry and the competitiveness with other companies make it necessary to constantly update oneself. This, instead of being an inconvenience, becomes a very healthy way to face the day to day.

  • .

    1. Job security and higher wages

      .

It may seem like a contradiction, and it is certain that a position as a civil servant is the most secure job. However, within the private sector, working as an employee for a company is not much more secure than being self-employed, and salaries, especially in this day and age, can be very low.

  • Contributing to society with employment

    .

  • There are several ways to help society: as a volunteer, in public functions and also by creating jobs. To achieve this, the only way is to start a company and hire people.

    1. Design your own work environment

      .

How big do you want your office to be? How do you want to decorate your restaurant? Entrepreneurship allows you to create your own workspace, whether in your home or in an office or retail space. You have all the freedom to do so.

    1. Surround yourself with people like you

      .

We are «social animals». We need to communicate and be with like-minded people. When you are an entrepreneur, it is inevitable to get in contact with other entrepreneurs, which enriches and makes you feel part of a larger community with the same values and goals, which has a positive impact on your own personal development.

    10 STEPS TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

A study by the Instituto del Emprendimiento Eugenio Garza Lagüera states that the lack of objectives is the first reason for the failure of «startups».

While it is true that all roads lead to Rome, you have to know very well which path to follow in entrepreneurship to be successful, because in many cases, due to small mistakes (which seem insignificant) the «startups» thunder at the first attempt.

Many believe that entrepreneurship is easy and underestimate the activity, but we must take into account that although «Entrepreneurship is for everyone, not everyone is for entrepreneurship» What does it depend on? There are political, social, economic and, of course, personal factors. Here I share with you the ten steps to start that business that has been on your mind for so long, so you can start with the right foot.

    Principal steps for entrepreneurship

    .

    1. Define the reasons. If your motivation is to make money, better look for a traditional job; really identify what moves you to entrepreneurship

    2.

    2. Evaluate yourself. Take into account if you have what it takes or are willing to learn it, if not, go your way elsewhere

    3.

    3. Select an idea. Whatever your mind can believe, it can do; no matter how crazy it may seem, it’s a matter of focus and perseverance

    4. Define a business model. What will your product or service be, what is your target market, and what makes you different from others?

    5.

    5. Develop a business plan. In a document describe your company, market strategies, objectives, investment, profitability, etc.

    6.

    6. Form your work team. Great entrepreneurs surround themselves with people wiser than them, select people with your same passion

    7. Look for financing. If possible get financial support from some person or institutions (such as INADEM), compare options

    8.

    8. Get to work. There will never be a perfect project until it is experienced in practice, take the plunge and learn from trial and error

    9.

    9. Disseminate and promote. Let everyone know what you offer, take advantage of technology and do not forget the word of mouth recommendation, or your website

    10.

    10. Learn and specialize. Know your customers, suppliers; real costs, execution times, etcetera, and polish your business more and more

    .

Lastly, I leave you with «the pylon»: Think big. When you start to see results don’t stagnate on them, look for ways to move forward and achieve new goals.
