Smith+Nephew establishes digital surgery and robotics innovation centre in Germany

Smith+Nephew (NYSE:SNN) today announced that it has established a innovation centre dedicated to digital surgery and robotics in Germany.

Based in Munich, Smith+Nephew’s new innovation centre aims to connect healthcare professionals in Europe, the Middle East and Africa with the company’s medical research and training teams to gain further expertise in digital and robotic surgery techniques and technologies.

According to a press release, Smith+Nephew’s Real Intelligence digital ecosystem will be at the centre of the research, as well as the new CORI robotic-assisted surgery system. The centre will also include a dedicated medical education facility to hone techniques and utilise the latest technologies with hands-on learning and immersive simulations.

The centre will also house Smith+Nephew’s digital surgery and robotics research and development team, enabling collaboration with surgeons, scientists and engineers. The company said many members of this team have moved to Smith+Nephew from Brainlab as part of a collaboration announced in 2019.

The facility is scheduled to open in late 2022 at the Rhythm complex in Kustermann Park in central Munich. Smith+Nephew recently opened a similar centre in Pittsburgh, USA.

«We are delighted to announce the creation of this state-of-the-art centre focused on the development and application of digital surgery technologies and techniques,» said Peter Coenen, president of Smith+Nephew’s EMEA region, in a press release. «We look forward to sharing our plans as we move forward with our technology vision, and welcome customers to experience a new approach to medical education when we open next year.»
